Actions to date:

  • No plastic carrier bags

  • Disposable coffee cups made from Vegware

  • Paper straws

  • Compostable takeaway boxes

  • Wooden cutlery for takeaway

  • Condiments from bottles

  • Offers 15p discount to customers bringing their own re-useable cups (advertised on the main board)

  • Signed up to the ‘Refill Devon’ scheme.

  • Recycle cardboard, glass, plastic and paper through Network Rail’s contract with Virador; this has recently added in food waste at their urging.

  • Stock re-useable coffee cups and re-useable fruit and veg pouches.

  • Introduced a larger range of cans instead of bottles.

  • Storage containers from suppliers are re-used.

Working on:

  • Moving to Vegware cold drink containers (PLA)

  • Cakes, pasties, etc., are currently wrapped individually in plastic, will be moving to new display cabinets where chosen items go into paper bags.

  • Raised with supplier of greeting cards that these are wrapped in plastic, supplier looking into alternatives.

I was inspired by my daughter, who has set up Western Souls to do beach cleans, to make the café plastic free, because we feel it is really important for the environment. I’m also pleased with the positive feedback from our customers we’ve had.
